About The Social Web
We grew up on MySpace. We remember profiles that looked like the person who owned them, a friends list that meant something, and a feed that showed what our friends posted in the order they posted it. Then social media became a machine for selling attention, and the people on it became the product.
The Social Web is our answer: a small, invite-only social network that keeps the parts we loved and refuses the parts we hate.
What we promise
- No advertising, ever. There is no ad system to build and no advertiser to please.
- No tracking, no analytics, no data sales, ever. We do not run analytics scripts, pixels or third-party trackers. We keep what the service needs to work and nothing more. Read the Privacy Policy for the exact list.
- No algorithm. Feeds are chronological. Nothing is ranked for engagement, nothing is injected.
- Invite-only accounts are free forever. We may offer paid sign-ups or an optional low-cost subscription for extra features in the future to keep the lights on and the bots out; the members who got here by invitation never pay for what they have today.
- Your profile is yours. Colors, fonts, backgrounds, top friends, your wall. Customization that is data, not code, so nobody can hurt anyone else with it.
- Wellbeing before engagement. Features that can hurt — "memories", reminders, counts — are off by default and can be turned off for good.
What this is not
This is an experiment run by a very small team with limited funding, on hardware we own. We do our best to keep it secure and online, we patch quickly, and we are honest about incidents. But we are not a billion-dollar company, and you should treat anything you post here the way you would treat anything on the internet: keep your own copies of what matters, and read the Terms of Service, which spell out that you are responsible for your content and your data here.
